Can I really buy products to "cleanse and detoxify" my body?

Updated: Sep 21

This topic is showing no signs of slowing down as people constantly search for quick fixes to improve their health.. yet a major point is being overlooked in actually how the body works.

Supplements are big business as are detox diets..... but do you really need them? (Unless there is a valid reason... such as a medical reason or deficiency somewhere in relation to supplementation). The clue is in the word "supplement". It is to supplement a diet and cannot really replace a balanced diet.

There are still many divided opinions that lack solid research and evidence to suggest otherwise.

However, regarding detox diets, the body does a very good job of looking after itself generally speaking and the idea of buying a "detox diet" to detox the body is a pure myth. We have internal organs such as the liver and kidneys that do a great job of filtering and processing and nothing can be purchased to speed this process up or "shortcut" your way to better health.

The human body is a complex mechanism with many systems in place to maintain balance or homeostasis. Each individual processes what they consume and the only real way to improve health is to start being healthier. This doesn't happen overnight and takes a lifestyle approach of eating better with good nutrient content to provide the body with what it needs.

Drinking alcohol for example takes a certain ammount of time to filter through the body. No purchasable consumable can really do much to speed that up.

If a person decides to become healthier and "rid" the body of its unhealthy dietary habits then this comes around by lifestyle change over a period of time. There are no quick fixes.

🔶 ARE SUPPLEMENTS ARE A WASTE OF TIME?

In most cases... although that is not to say they aren't needed in some cases.

In those instances appropriate advice must be sought from a medical professional or registered dietician. Therefore a real need.. if in case of a deficiency, lack of nutrients for example not being consumed through a balanced diet or a definitive medical reason.

Caution must be aired if you simply have heard somewhere that a supplement will be good for you... and you plan to buy it over the counter at a "health" shop or online. Information and what is contained in those supplements can be hazy.

🔶 MY PERSONAL TRAINER SUGGESTED SOME SUPPLEMENTS. ARE THESE OKAY TO TAKE?

A personal trainer is not qualified to advise nor suggest on supplementation unless they are also qualified as a dietician. (Therefore able to prescribe).

Stepping outside the remit of what a person is qualified to do can have serious legal implications and for their professional insurance too.

🔶 MY FRIEND WENT ON A DETOX DIET AND IT WORKED.

More than likely statements like that can be a "placebo" effect. It is also the fact that a "detox" diet may not necessarily contain any harmful ingredient, it is simply the idea or marketing behind it bears no relation to facts and is a myth.

🔶 THE DANGERS OF LACK OF EDUCATION.

There are recent claims of a "supplement" to cleanse the respiratory system and help COPD. This is a dangerous course to consider when no foundation of education is in place.

COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is a serious health condition and not one to be mocked or made light of. COPD is not curable though its symptoms can be managed with effective exercise programming to maximise on available lung function.

Medical intervention may also be evident by way of prescribed treatments such as inhalers or drugs depending on the level of the disease and the individual circumstances.

The idea that the respiratory system can be cleansed by taking a pill does not take into account any information about COPD, or the fact that you cannot "cleanse" the body by taking a pill or supplement.

🔶 In summary. What is the best course of action? The best course of action is lifestyle change both in nutrition and physical activity. If you feel the need to take supplements, what is the reasoning? What do you base this on? The best and recommended pathway is to talk to your doctor or a registered dietician first.
